Sweetgrass Stonefly - Doug McKnight fly tying pattern
Struggling for tying a hackle in , not now , brilliant vid . Thanks
Has anyone really ever tested this knot ? My testing shows it's not any stronger than a standard Blood Knot. As a matter of fact it's a lot harder to get tight making it a weaker knot.
Sexy vise
CDC is one of those feathers I can’t imagine not having. It has this way of just making certain patterns BETTER. I was on a pretty major caddis hatch last night so my little elk hairs would have a tough time getting noticed. But the CDC elk hair has a way of drawing attention in a way that looks natural and attractive as opposed to unnatural and scary…and as if in cue, I was on the fish almost immediately.
I just came across this tutorial and really like the pattern, enough so im going to have to add it to my fly box. Thanks for clear instruction and the tricks you used to get the end results. God Bless n Fish on!
I like how you use a half hitch after every segment.
Beautiful job. Your soft hackle laid back perfectly. It is nerve racking tying live in front of others and you did remarkably well. Thanks!
Nice fly
Nice fly, been looking for a simple easy pattern. Thank you!
That there is some bug
Marc P. You are the best CDC flytier ever. Thank you. I still enjoy your video’s 🙏.
Glad to see you tie in Idaho falls. Amazing
Nice one!
best permit fly ever
This was a certified Rick Wollum Moment
My elks mane came curved from being compressed in the package and is difficult to work with. Is there a way to straighten it out?
I met Gary tying at the Wasatch Expo in 2022. Talk about a class act.
From time to time I like to watch this video all over again
I'll definitely tie some for the spring and summer. Thank you for such an informative video!
this fly was in your fly box that you let me look through! so neat Steve! ❤
You stupid son of a bitch are you gonna tie it or you gonna talk about it?
Thank you very much for the explanation, I updated the pattern with a back in UV resin :)
Awesome fly! Thanks for sharing. Does the prismatic tape come pre-slit like that?
Nice pattern! What type of body material do you use on the golden version?
Is it true that these flies are so durable and won’t break unless you lose them
It is true. I usually lose them before they break down. In fact, never had one fall apart on me!
I been using this fly last few years catches fish in Colorado , Montana, Wyoming and North Carolina so i bet u can catch fish anywhere with this fly
Your tying inspires me to tie better flies. Good job sir.
X- caddis and the Iris caddis are great patterns my Craig Mathews, former owner of Blue Ribbon Flies, West Yellowstone MT. These have accounted for hundreds and hundreds of fish!!
Exactly what I want to see thank you for a wonderful session well done
nice fly i like moths
Nice fly and technique Thanks
Where did you get that picture frame. Behind you.
What vice are you using?
The most highly praised fly scam tying tool ever. Overpriced and almost useless and only to trick and scam newbies
Or help newbies who don't have the advanced skills yet. Not everyone has been doing this for decades. Some are just getting started.
thanx Dandy !
You're welcome!
Your video is very good, it's to bad , myself I can't hear you or understand half of what you are saying , please turn your mike up n talk a lil louder , I do want to learn, thank you.
Sorry for that. I'd recommend using headphones and turing up the volume on your device. Also check the audio out put settings for the UA-cam player. Sometimes that gets set lower on people's account. As for the French, not much I can do about that. Thanks for giving us a try. -H

Beautiful fly , what size hook you use ?
Hmm. I think it varies but pretty small. -H
Hen neck?? Looks like rooster
Hi Kirk, Dandy knows her stuff. Perhaps check with her directly at Hatchfinders.com. They tie thousands of flies every year in house. -H
Cute but you sped it up too fast. Benny Hill doesn't approve😉
Yeah, this is just a teaser for the main video on the channel which is in real-time. Thanks. -H
Nice streamee. Thank you for the clear n precise directions, good tips included. Thanks again. God Bless n Fish on!
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video thanks so much. Makes me want to get out my voice again.
You should!
Expertly tied
He's a master. -H
I just wanted to thank Mr.Petitjean for teaching me how to spin a CDC feather on a hook. I was watching another tutorial and he couldn't do your method so he dubbed the CDC onto the thread and wrapped it onto the shaft .I didn't like his method , and I have mastered Mr. Petitjean's method and I'm proud of it. thankyou.Ken 👍✌Tight lines guy's.
Well done. Thanks. -H
Is the 17/0 really necessary?
Possibly. -H
This is a very enjoyable and quite instructive video. When I first learned to spin deer to tie Muddlers in the 1980s,I got so excited that I tied enough originals and variations to last 30 years. When back issues stopped my fishing, I stopped tying until I discovered the Healing Waters program welcomed fly donations. Now that I’m preparing to tie a large batch of Muddlers again, I’ve been watching as many videos as I can to see how the best tyers tie the Muddler, and this is the best video that I have found. Please convey my respects and compliments to Mr. Jacklin on a great and helpful video. Thank you for sharing this video. p.s. what glue was Mr. Jacklin using for the intermediate stages of the fly?
Thanks so much for the comment and for helping such a great organization like Healing Waters. I'm not sure what glue he was using on this but I'd encourage you to reach out to his shop at (406)646-7336 or jacklinsflyshop.qwestoffice.net/ (google may give you a warning it's not a safe site, but it is)
You're a real Dandy, ma'am. ❤
Thanks. She's great. -H
DOUG, REALLY A GREAT VIDEO, EASY TO FOLLOW, AND A BEAUTIFUL FLY, THANK YOU, MSG Leum
Glad it was helpful! -H
You did an outstanding job for a tricky fly to tie
He's a master with the deer hair. -H
